Chinese Herbal Medicine May Relieve PMS
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which consists of acupuncture, herbs, body work and energy balancing exercises, is a great approach to relieving symptoms associated with PMS. In fact, in my nearly 10 years in private practice, as a Licensed Acupuncturist, I have had only a handful of patients (out of the hundreds....maybe thousands?) with PMS complaints, who did not respond favorably to the protocol I gave them. While acupuncture addresses PMS very effectively, Chinese Herbal Medicine is an effective approach as well--and something you can do from wherever you are. Basically, TCM recognizes PMS as a condition of "stuck" or stagnant energy, creating irritability, frustration, migraines, breast tenderness and difficult menstrual periods. Chinese Herbal Medicine incorporates herbs that effective invigorate your circulation, and help to clear out the stagnant and stuck energies. One of the approaches I use in my private practice, is to use a PMS herbal formula that I have formulated to specifically address this issue of energy stagnation, which is the "root" issue behind the symptoms of PMS. Herbs such as Dong Gui (Angelica sinensis), dandelion root, Buchu, Uva Ursi, Chasteberry and others can be effective combinations to move stagnation and invigorate blood circulation--particularly to the uterus, ovaries and through the energy meridian associated with the Liver. Another tip I can pass along is the fact that sour flavors, such as fresh lemon juice and/or a small amount of organic apple cider vinegar mixed into a glass of water, help to invigorate and move liver energy, which relieves PMS symptoms. If you can tolerate the heat, cayenne pepper can be a good addition to your beverages above, but only if it doesn't make you irritable or cause you to awaken at night with night sweats--so watch for that. If you are prone to night sweats, make sure you don't put yourself over the edge by adding more spice into your diet! Lastly, but not any less important, make sure that you get plenty of fresh water each day, and make time in your schedule for some type of gentle exercise. Walking, yoga, chi gong, stretching and strength training are all good approaches to keep your energy circulating, prevent stagnation and improve PMS. If you want help with PMS symptoms, you can find some of the herbs I mentioned in a health food store or through an herbal practitioner. We also carry a PMS specific herbal formula through our clinic, which you can read about at our website (www.MileyLabs.com/pms.html) if interested. Hope this helps you get off to a good start, in finding answers to you PMS questions!
